Champions League – English Preview

SPARTAK MOSCOW v LIVERPOOL:  Most Russian sides usually have good home records in the champions league but not Spartak Moscow. They’ve only won 2 of their last 17 at the Otkryiye Arena and I can’t see it getting any better especially against an attacking force like Liverpool who create many chances. Liverpool do have a poor recent away record in the champions League, but can’t see it playing any part here.

Liverpool to win comfortably here.
MANCHESTER CITY v SHAKHTAR DONETSK: The question right now is “who can stop City?”. They’ve scored 22 goals in their last 5 competitive games and don’t look like slowing down. To make things worse, Shakhtar have never won away to English opposition in the champions league. Shakhtar do have an attacking threat of their own though so if City are not careful they can be hurt in the break.

But going by City’s current form and Shakhtars woes in England I can only see a City win here. 3-1 my prediction

APOEL NICOSIA v TOTTENHAM: Tottenham will be very confident coming into the tie knowing that no Cypriot side has ever beaten English opposition (D2 , L10)  and have lost 10 of their last 12 champions league matches.  the quality that Spurs possess in the front third should be more than enough to secure a very comfortable win here and I would be suprised to see Harry Kane continue his great run of scoring

CSKA MOSCOW v MANCHESTER UNITED:  CSKA have not kept a clean sheet in 29 champions league games and I can’t see that changing against a Manchester United side who are brimming with confidence, especially Lukaku who has bagged 6 goals already this season. The winner here will take a very big leap toward the knockout phase

ATLETICO MADRID v CHELSEA:  Atletico Madrid are set to play their first Champions League game at the Wanda Metropolitano and will be looking to get off to a winning start and will have confidence knowing they have kept 16 clean sheets in their last 19 home games. Chelsea are coming off a big win against Qarabag and will hope to make it 2 from 2. I really can’t split these two sides and see nothing but a low scoring draw, possibly 0-0
